OUR VOTE, OUR VOICE

The Caribbean Equality Project builds political power through civic engagement, voter registration, public education, and legislative advocacy.

Voting is a constitutional right, one which we must ALL exercise with liberalism and equity and it demonstrates our political power to elect progressive leaders. Leaders who will advance LGBTQ+ affirming legislation, end religious and racially discriminatory policies, and fight for equity for ALL, regardless of one's immigration status. To encourage civic participation in the 2021 primary and general elections and promote voter education, we are launching "Mash-up De Vote," a Black and Brown Caribbean immigrant-focused civic engagement campaign. This culturally-responsive initiative aims to mobilize Caribbean immigrants, Caribbean-Americans, and LGBTQ+ people to VOTE to create a future in which we are all safe, have economic sustainability, and are free to live and breathe.

As an LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights organization, we register eligible voters, coordinate political candidate forums, and work with allied community partners to amplify Black and Brown Queer and Trans Caribbean voices in New York. Our civic engagement organizing recognizes that our Queer, TGNC, and Trans electorate members need to get out and vote in every election. While there are members of our Queer Caribbean community that are ineligible to vote due to their citizenship status, we strongly encourage those in our community who are a part of the electorate to register to vote in every election. In doing so, we can civically advocate for full and equal voting rights for all going forward.

This year, you have multiple options for casting your vote:

  1. Vote by mail via absentee ballot

  2. Vote Early: October 23 - October 31, 2021

  3. Vote in person on Election Day, November 2

The outcome of elections stands to make a significant impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ immigrants in our state and city, affecting everything from sentencing in court cases (based on the judges we elect) to voting access (based on the fate of important ballot proposals).
