Sekiya Dorsett
Director, Caribbean Queen
Sekiya Dorsett (she/her) is a GLAAD Award-winning filmmaker and the creative force behind Seabreeze Media Inc., a company dedicated to amplifying marginalized voices through powerful storytelling. Her acclaimed works include The Revival: Women and the Word, a documentary about a touring collective of Black lesbian poets and musicians, acquired by Women Make Movies. She was also part of the team behind In Our Mothers’ Gardens, a celebrated exploration of intergenerational Black womanhood that premiered on Netflix.
Dorsett directed the four-episode documentary series Stonewall Revolution for NBC News, currently streaming on Peacock, which earned her both a GLAAD Media Award and the NLGJA Excellence in Digital Journalism Award. In 2022, she was named Barnard College’s inaugural Artemis Rising Foundation Fellow for her outstanding contributions to non-fiction storytelling. Her forthcoming films include I Love Bed-Stuy, a docu-fiction love letter to Brooklyn, and 20 Years of Longing, supported by a Firelight Media Grant, which delves into the journey of Black Caribbean lesbians building families in an evolving America.
Her most recent film, Caribbean Queen, in association with Caribbean Equality Project, addressing LGBTQ stigma in Caribbean communities, premiered at BAM during NewFest 2023, earning both the Audience Award and recognition for her directing. Her work has been featured at prestigious venues, including the Tribeca Film Festival, Urbanworld Film Festival, Outfest, and Brooklyn Museum.
Dorsett holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Hunter College and is an Assistant Professor in the Film Department at Hofstra University, where she continues to inspire the next generation of storytellers.
