Providing a safe space for queer LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies to break fast during Ramadan.
The LGBTQ+ Community Iftar is an annual celebration held at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City. The forum is grounded in creating a safe and affirming space for LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies who celebrate Ramadan in solidarity. Since 2017, Caribbean Equality Project has been co-organizing this historic community-centered dinner during the holy month of Ramadan in partnership with organizations serving the LGBTQ+ Muslim community in New York City.
Now in its ninth year, the LGBTQ+ community Iftar was founded to uplift, hold a safe space for, and celebrate the intersections of identities and religious observation/practices found throughout the greater LGBTQ+ Muslim Communities. This annual event features iftar (a large shared meal signifying the breaking of fast), gender-neutral prayer, education, storytelling, culturally responsive entertainment, performances, resource sharing, and more.
What is Iftar?
A meal that begins at sundown to break the daily fast during Ramadan.
