Ryan Persadie

Educator & PhD Student, University of Toronto

Ryan Persadie is an educator, PhD student in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto and co-organizes of the 2018 Breaking Silences: A Caribbean LGBTQ People of Color Symposium in Toronto, Canada. He holds a MA in Ethnomusicology and Sexual Diversity Studies from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). His research investigates the interrelations of Trinidadian soca (and soca-chutney) music, queer diasporic Carnival spaces, drag culture, queer Indo-Caribbean diasporas and identities, and the politics of belonging, citizenship and “pride” in Canada. In addition, Ryan is also a practicing drag artist in Toronto where he goes by the name of “Tifa Wine”. His community work, research and performances as Tifa Wine work to offer a queered expression of his diasporic positionality and forefront and center the experiences, narratives and voices of the Indo-Caribbean in both diasporic Caribbean and queer spaces.
